About Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a 200-metre granite inselberg that King Kasyapa turned into a capital in the 5th century, after seizing the throne from his father and, the chronicles say, fearing the half-brother who would eventually come for him. What he left behind is extraordinary: symmetrical water gardens at the base whose fountains still run after heavy rain, a boulder garden scattered with the footings of pavilions, and a stairway that once passed through the paws and open jaws of a brick lion - only the paws survive, and they give the rock its name. Halfway up, a sheltered gallery holds the famous frescoes of bare-shouldered women in cloud, and below them the mirror wall, polished plaster still carrying verses scratched by visitors between the 8th and 10th centuries - among the oldest graffiti anywhere. The summit is the palace itself, reduced to foundations and a cistern cut into rock, with the Cultural Triangle laid out in every direction. UNESCO-listed since 1982; about 1,200 steps from bottom to top.
