About Minneriya National Park
Minneriya National Park, in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, is world-famous for a single spectacular event: The Gathering. Every dry season, as water sources shrink across the region, hundreds of wild elephants converge on the receding shores of the ancient Minneriya tank - a reservoir built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD. Between July and September it is common to watch 150 to 300 elephants grazing, bathing, and socialising on the grassy lake bed at once, the largest recurring congregation of wild Asian elephants anywhere in the world. Beyond the elephants, the park's mix of tank, wetland, and scrub forest supports toque macaques, purple-faced langurs, crocodiles, and superb birdlife including painted storks and pelicans lining the water's edge. Its location minutes from Habarana makes it an easy afternoon safari between Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa.
