About Kanthale Lake
Kanthale Lake is an enormous ancient tank (reservoir) built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD. Its shoreline stretches for kilometres, and at dawn and dusk it erupts with birdlife - thousands of migratory and resident water birds including pelicans, painted storks, whistling teal, and raptors hunting over the water. It's less famous than Minneriya's Gathering but equally rich in wildlife. Crocodiles bask on the shores, and water buffalo herds wade in the shallows. The surrounding scrub forest holds elephants during the dry season. Kayaking on the lake at dawn is one of Sri Lanka's most magical experiences - the silence broken only by birds and the soft splash of paddles. Few tourists visit; it remains a local secret.
