About Gal Viharaya
Gal Viharaya is the summit of Sinhalese rock sculpture: four monumental images of the Buddha, commissioned by King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century, carved side by side from one long ridge of streaked granite. The ensemble reads as a meditation in stone - a deep-seated Buddha in perfect samadhi; a smaller seated figure within a carved cave-shrine; the enigmatic seven-metre standing image, arms crossed with such unusual tenderness that scholars long debated whether it shows the grieving disciple Ananda; and the fourteen-metre reclining Buddha entering parinirvana, the pillow yielding under the head, the soles of the feet minutely unaligned to signal death rather than sleep. The natural banding of the rock flows through all four figures like a current. Crowds come, and dissolve before it; give the reclining face ten unhurried minutes and eight centuries disappear.
