Rankoth Vehera - 'the gold-pinnacled stupa' - is medieval Polonnaruwa saluting ancient Anuradhapura: King Nissanka Malla, never shy about his achievements (an inscription at the site records him supervising the works), raised the city's largest dagoba in conscious imitation of the great Ruwanwelisaya. At around 33 metres high and 170 in circumference, it remains the fourth-largest stupa on the island, a stepped brick mountain rising from a sand terrace ringed by image houses and the flower-altars of the faithful in the ancient city's monastic northern quarter, the Alahana Pirivena. Unlike its Anuradhapura models it was never fully whitewashed back to newness, and is the better for it: the weathered brick glows amber in late light, swifts wheel around the pinnacle, and the terrace views run south over the whole ruined university-city toward the Lankathilaka's towering walls. Cycle up, shoes off, circle slowly.
