The Nelum Pokuna is the ancient city's most charming flourish: a bathing pool at Polonnaruwa's northern end built as a lotus in full bloom - five concentric tiers of eight petals each, stepping down in perfect stone symmetry to the water at the flower's heart. Probably serving the monks of the adjacent Jetavana monastery quarter (whose star attraction, the Thivanka image house, stands two minutes away), the little bath distils the era's signature move - engineering dissolved into art - into a single, photogenic gesture. Archaeologists note that a series of such baths may once have lined a monastic promenade; this is the survivor. It fills after rains, mirroring the trees; dry, its geometry reads even more crisply.
