Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's second capital from the 11th to 13th centuries and remains one of the finest examples of urban planning in the medieval world. Unlike Anuradhapura's sprawling ruins, Polonnaruwa's monuments are concentrated in a compact 140-hectare park, making it possible to see everything in a day by bicycle or tuk-tuk. Highlights include the Royal Palace with its ornate carvings, the massive Rankot Vihara stupa, the serene Gal Vihara rock temple with its four stunning Buddha carvings, and the Atadage (shrine). The most evocative site is the Gal Vihara, where a 14-metre reclining Buddha and three standing Buddhas are carved directly from the rock. Walking through Polonnaruwa is to step through layers of Sinhalese history.
