About Polonnaruwa Vatadage
The Vatadage is the jewel of Polonnaruwa's Sacred Quadrangle and, for many, the single most beautiful structure surviving from medieval Sri Lanka: a circular relic house - probably enshrining the Tooth Relic itself under the 12th-century kings - built as rings of diminishing stone terraces crowned once by a conical wooden roof. Its ornament is a textbook of the island's stone-carving at its zenith: the finest moonstone of the Polonnaruwa period lies at the northern entrance, guardstones with their naga kings flank each of the four stairways, and at the top of each stair a seated Buddha faces its cardinal direction from the central dagoba's ruin. The encircling stone screen wall, the lotus-carved pillars, the balustrades - every element repays close looking. Come at opening or near closing, when the quadrangle empties and the circle's calm geometry works uninterrupted; it is the Polonnaruwa photograph, and better in person.
