The Thivanka Pilimage guards the painted soul of Polonnaruwa at the ancient city's quiet northern end. Its name describes its resident: the colossal brick-and-stucco Buddha inside stands in the thivanka - 'thrice bent' - posture, flexed at knee, hip, and shoulder in a swaying grace normally reserved for images of gods and kings, unique among the island's colossal Buddhas. Around it, on every surviving wall surface, are the frescoes that make art historians whisper: the finest paintings of the Polonnaruwa period, Jataka tales and processions of celestial beings in ochres and greens, stylistic descendants of Sigiriya's maidens and ancestors of the Kandyan tradition. The exterior walls carry exuberant stucco of dwarfs, lions, and miniature mansions. Conservation means lighting is dim and photography restricted - bring patient eyes. Paired with the lotus bath two minutes away, it closes the northern cycling loop on a high note.
