The Golden Temple of Dambulla is Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex, consisting of five interconnected caves carved into a 160-metre granite rock. Inside are 153 Buddha statues (ranging from ancient carvings to 18th-century works), intricate murals covering nearly every surface, and a labyrinth of passages that feel like stepping into centuries past. The caves were carved and decorated over 2,000 years, and the complex was a royal sanctuary during times of turmoil. The most striking feature is the vast reclining Buddha in Cave 2, and the towering Buddha statue in the entrance courtyard. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dambulla is both a working pilgrimage temple and a window into Sinhalese Buddhist art and history.
