Pidurangala Rock sits directly opposite Sigiriya Rock, and its 370-metre climb offers the best viewpoint of the Lion Rock at sunrise - without the crowds of Sigiriya itself. The reward is a stunning panorama across the Cultural Triangle: Sigiriya's distinctive column catching the first light, jungle stretching to the horizon, and on clear mornings, even the Knuckles Range visible in the distance. An ancient Buddhist monastery once occupied the summit (ruins remain), making it both a scenic and spiritual site. The hike is straightforward (45 minutes up), with occasional steps and scrambles. Sunset from Pidurangala is quieter but equally beautiful.
