Jathika Namal Uyana, near Dambulla, pairs two natural wonders found together nowhere else: the largest na (ironwood) tree forest in Sri Lanka - the national tree, planted here in monastic gardens perhaps a thousand years ago - and a range of rose quartz hills whose pink crystal, more than 500 million years old, is said to be South Asia's largest deposit. The walk in passes ancient monastic ruins beneath flowering ironwoods (a refuge, tradition says, for exiled royals and for monks since the 8th century), then climbs gently onto the bare quartz, which glows shell-pink to lavender under the open sky. From the crystalline summit, a small white stupa surveys the dry-zone plain to Sigiriya and Ritigala on the horizons. Managed with a light monastic touch, it stays serene even in season - go at golden hour when the mountain truly turns rose.
