Deep in the countryside west of Kala Wewa stands Sasseruwa - Ras Vehera - a 12-metre Buddha carved into a great gneiss outcrop, forever linked with its famous twin at Avukana by one of Sri Lanka's best-loved legends: a master and pupil, it is said, carved the two images in competition, and when the master's Avukana statue was finished first, the Sasseruwa image was left incomplete. Scholars debate the tale, but the statue's raw, unpolished power is beyond argument - the figure seems to be stepping out of the living rock, its unfinished surfaces recording the very strokes of the ancient chisels. Around it spreads a genuinely ancient forest monastery: cave temples with Kandyan paintings, a bo tree said to be among the first saplings of the sacred Anuradhapura tree, and drip-ledged caves numbering in the dozens. Few visitors make it here - which is exactly its magic.
