About Vessagiriya
Vessagiriya is Anuradhapura stripped to its beginnings: a jumble of giant granite boulders south of the sacred city, hollowed by wind and time into natural shelters where some of the island's first monks - by tradition, five hundred ordained men of the vessa merchant caste, giving the site its name - took up residence in the 3rd century BC. Drip ledges cut along the cave brows (to shed rainwater) and Brahmi inscriptions naming long-dead donors still mark dozens of shelters, and rock-cut steps wander up between the boulders to ledges with sunset views over the paddy plain. Later centuries added a monastery linked with nearby Isurumuniya. Unfenced, unticketed, and often empty, Vessagiriya at golden hour - swallows hawking round the rocks, inscriptions catching the low light - is the most atmospheric free half-hour in Anuradhapura.
