About Ruwanwelisaya Stupa
The Ruwanwelisaya is the emotional heart of Buddhist Sri Lanka: a colossal white dome raised by the hero-king Dutugemunu in 140 BC, so precious to him that tradition says he was carried to see its unfinished crown on his deathbed. At 103 metres with a circumference of 290, it stood among the tallest structures of the ancient world, and unlike its ruined contemporaries it remains a living shrine - freshly whitewashed, wrapped on festival days in a saffron sash kilometres long, and circled day and night by white-clad pilgrims whose chanting carries across the sand terrace. The frieze of nearly 350 stone elephants shoulders the platform as if bearing the dome to heaven. Come at dusk as the lamps are lit and the dome flushes rose against the darkening sky - few sights in Asia are more serene.
