Ranmasu Uyana - the 'Gold Fish Park' - was the pleasure garden of Anuradhapura's kings: forty acres of landscaped grounds beneath the bund of the Tissa Wewa reservoir, whose waters were channelled through ingenious stone conduits to fill rock-cut royal baths that still hold water today. Boulders were built into the design rather than cleared - one shelters a carved elephant frieze, others frame bathing pavilions where, chronicles hint, prince Saliya courted the maiden Asokamala. The garden's modern fame, though, is a Sri Lankan mystery: the Sakwala Chakraya, a detailed circular diagram carved into a rock face, viewed from seats cut into the boulder opposite. Scholars read it as an ancient cosmological map; the internet prefers 'stargate'. Either way, it is unique on the island - and the garden's shady quiet, two minutes from Isurumuniya, makes the puzzle a pleasure to ponder.
