About Ritigala Forest Monastery
Ritigala is the strangest mountain in the Cultural Triangle: a 766-metre massif that erupts from the flat dry-zone plains, high enough to trap its own clouds and grow a misty hilltop forest found nowhere else in the region - Ramayana legend explains it as a chunk of the Himalayas dropped by Hanuman mid-flight, herbs and all. On its lower slopes lie the extensive ruins of a great forest monastery of the Pansukulikas, an ascetic order of rag-robe monks: a vast stone-banked bathing tank (Banda Pokuna) at the entrance, then a paved meditation pathway winding uphill past double-platform structures, sunken courtyards, and a ruined hospital. True to the monks' austerity, you will find no Buddha statues and no decorated stupas - just superb stonework dissolving into jungle. Now a Strict Nature Reserve, the upper mountain is closed; the archaeological site delivers atmosphere few ancient places can match.
