The Avukana Buddha is widely considered the most beautiful ancient statue in Sri Lanka. Carved in the 5th century from a single face of granite beside the great Kala Wewa reservoir, the 12-metre figure stands in the 'blessing' posture, robes flowing in carved pleats so fine they seem wind-blown - a masterpiece of the Anuradhapura school at its height. Tradition says it was the work of a master sculptor in competition with his pupil (whose unfinished rival statue stands at nearby Sasseruwa); the master's victory is written in every perfect line. The statue faces the reservoir built by King Dhatusena, who is popularly linked with commissioning it. Come at dawn if you can: the rising sun strikes the stone face full-on, and for a few minutes the Buddha seems lit from within.
