About Hurulu Eco Park
Hurulu Eco Park is a section of the Hurulu Forest Reserve, designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1977, and one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants outside the famous Gathering season. Its rolling landscape of open grassland and regenerating dry-zone scrub is prime elephant habitat, and herds move between Hurulu, Minneriya, and Kaudulla throughout the year - so when the tanks at the neighbouring parks are full and the elephants disperse, Hurulu is where the safari jeeps head. Sightings of twenty or more elephants in a single evening drive are common, often with tiny calves in tow. The reserve also shelters leopards, rusty-spotted cats, and the endemic Sri Lanka junglefowl. Just fifteen minutes from Habarana, it slots neatly into any Cultural Triangle itinerary alongside Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Ritigala.
