Galle Face Green is Colombo's living room: a half-kilometre ribbon of lawn between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean, laid out in 1859 by Governor Henry Ward 'in the interests of the ladies and children of Colombo' - a promise honoured every evening since. As the sun drops, the Green fills with the city in miniature: kite-sellers and kite-flyers, cricket games, courting couples on the sea wall, and the smoky row of food carts serving isso vadei (prawn-topped lentil fritters), kottu, and achcharu to queues of every community. The giant national flag snaps in the sea wind at the southern end, near the grand old Galle Face Hotel where high tea has been served since 1864. It isn't a manicured park - it's better: the most democratic, atmospheric public space in Sri Lanka, and the perfect first or last evening of any trip.
