About Gangaramaya Temple
Gangaramaya is Colombo's liveliest and most eclectic Buddhist temple - part place of worship, part museum, part cabinet of curiosities. Its halls overflow with Buddha images from across Asia, vintage cars gifted by devotees, ivory carvings, and old coins, all crammed together with cheerful abandon; at its heart stand a sacred Bo tree and a richly decorated main shrine. A short walk away on Beira Lake floats the temple's meditation annex, Seema Malaka - a set of serene blue-roofed pavilions on platforms over the water, redesigned by the great architect Geoffrey Bawa in 1976. Seema Malaka at dusk, with the city towers reflected in the lake behind rows of seated Buddhas, is one of Colombo's defining images. In February, the temple's Navam Perahera fills the streets with drummers, dancers, and dozens of elephants.
