About Colombo

Colombo rewards travellers who give it more than an airport transfer. The commercial capital layers 500 years of trading history: the cinnamon warehouses and Dutch-era streets of Fort and Pettah, grand British-era hotels and courts, and a skyline now punctuated by the Lotus Tower. Galle Face Green, the ocean-front lawn where the whole city gathers at dusk for kites and isso vadei (prawn fritters), is one of Asia's great people-watching spots. Gangaramaya temple and its serene lake pavilion Seema Malaka anchor the city's spiritual life, while the National Museum holds the throne of the Kandyan kings.
