About Negombo
Negombo is most travellers' first or last stop in Sri Lanka - only 15 minutes from the international airport - but it deserves more than a transit night. This is one of the island's great fishing towns: at the open-air fish market (the lellama) near the lagoon mouth, hundreds of oruvas (outrigger canoes) land their catch each morning, and the beach fills with fishermen hauling nets exactly as they have for generations. The Dutch left a working canal network you can explore by boat, and the town's strong Catholic heritage has earned it the nickname 'Little Rome' for its grand churches. Negombo lagoon crab curry is reason enough to stay for dinner. The wide beach is pleasant for sunset strolls, and Muthurajawela marsh at the lagoon's southern end offers a surprising wetland boat safari.
