St. Anthony's Shrine at Kochchikade is Colombo's church of the people: a harbourside basilica grown from a fisherman's chapel and a legend - the Oratorian priest who, hiding from Dutch persecution among the fishing families, is said to have planted a cross and stilled the sea that threatened their shore. The saint of Padua became the port district's protector, and his Tuesday devotions are one of the city's great sights of shared faith: Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims join Catholics in the queue with candles and garlands, seeking the intercession Colombo simply calls 'Kochchikade'. The church was among those attacked on Easter Sunday 2019; its restoration and packed congregations since stand as the community's answer, and a small memorial honours the lost.
