The Old Dutch Hospital is Colombo's most charming resurrection: a low, thick-walled complex of wards and courtyards built by the Dutch East India Company in the late 17th century to nurse its sailors and soldiers - making it the oldest building in the Fort district - and restored in 2011 into a dining-and-shopping precinct that immediately became the city's living room. The architecture did not need improving: five wings of terracotta roof, teak columns, and deep verandahs wrap two breezy courtyards where the VOC's patients once convalesced and Colombo now lingers over crab curries, cocktails, and coffee. Anchor tenants include the celebrated Ministry of Crab, but the pleasure is the ensemble - lamplight on old stone, the harbour breeze, three centuries of history holding a dinner party. It is the natural finish to any Fort heritage walk, and the easiest great evening in the capital.
