Sambodhi Chaithya solves a uniquely Buddhist urban problem with panache: how to give the harbour of a great port a stupa that ships can see. The answer, built in the 1950s at the initiative of prime minister D. S. Senanayake, was to lift the entire dagoba twenty metres into the air on two soaring interlocking concrete arches - a mid-century engineering flourish that still startles at the end of Marine Drive in Fort. Climbing the long stairway (or the newer lift) brings you to the elevated terrace, where the white dome shares its platform with one of Colombo's least-known great views: the working harbour's cranes and container ships on one side, the Fort skyline and ocean horizon on the other. Inside, murals line the relic chamber. Few tourists ever come, which makes this eccentric, endearing landmark feel like a private discovery.
