About Port City Colombo

Port City is Colombo's boldest bet: 269 hectares of land reclaimed from the Indian Ocean beside Galle Face Green, master-planned as a new financial district and already Colombo's most curious evening excursion. The appeal today is the spectacle of a city being born - broad, palm-lined boulevards and a marina taking shape between construction sites, a long sea-facing promenade and urban beaches where the ocean used to be, food-truck evenings, festivals, and motorsport events colonising the empty blocks, and the skyline of old Colombo - Lotus Tower, Galle Face hotels, harbour cranes - composed freshly from the seaward side. Photographers come for exactly that reverse angle. What it becomes remains Sri Lanka's biggest urban question; what it is now is a breezy, spacious, slightly surreal counterpoint to Pettah's ancient crush - best at sunset, when the new streets glow and the old city watches from across the water.
