About Viharamahadevi Park
Viharamahadevi Park is Colombo's oldest and grandest public garden: laid out in the British era as Victoria Park and renamed for the heroic queen of Sinhalese legend, it spreads its great lawns, fountain avenues, and centenarian trees between the National Museum and the wedding-cake dome of the Town Hall - the capital's most photographed civic view. In April and May the park performs its signature show, when the flame trees (flamboyants) ignite in vermilion over the walkways. A serene golden Buddha faces the Town Hall across the flower gardens; deeper in are a children's play park and mini-zoo corner, pony rides, food carts, and the shaded benches where half of Colombo courts, studies, and naps. War-time closures and renovations behind it, the park now anchors the Cinnamon Gardens cultural quarter - museum, art gallery, Independence Square all within a stroll - making it the natural green pause in any Colombo day.
