Mount Lavinia is where Colombo goes to the beach. Just 30–40 minutes south of the city centre (or a short ride on the coastal train, which runs right along the water), this seaside suburb is built around the Mount Lavinia Hotel - the 19th-century mansion of British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland, whose legendary romance with a local dancer named Lovina gave the area its name. The long golden beach below fills with families, kite-flyers, and couples every evening, and its strip of seafood restaurants serves grilled prawns and crab with your feet practically in the sand.
