About Weligama Bay
Weligama Bay is a wide, sheltered crescent of pale sand backed by a palm-fringed village, famous for the iconic pole fishermen who balance on a single stick in the shallow water at sunset - one of Sri Lanka's most photographed sights. The bay itself is calm and perfect for swimming (unlike the rougher nearby breaks), with warm water year-round and excellent snorkeling around the offshore reefs. The village pulses with energy: fish markets, beach shacks serving fresh catch, guesthouses, and backpacker cafes. It's far less touristy than Mirissa to the south, more authentic than Hikkaduwa, and easier to reach than Arugam Bay. Many travellers base themselves here for days, splitting time between beach days and exploring nearby Galle, Unawatuna, and Matara.
