About Koggala
Koggala wraps three attractions into one easy stop on the Galle–Matara coast road. First is its lake: a broad, island-scattered lagoon where boat tours visit a cinnamon island and a temple island, and where Madol Duwa - the island made famous by Martin Wickramasinghe's beloved children's novel - fires the imagination of every Sri Lankan schoolchild. Second is the writer himself: the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, built around his preserved childhood home, is one of the country's best small museums, a loving collection of village life - fishing gear, kitchen craft, masks, and carts - set in beautiful gardens. Third is the coast: a long, wind-brushed beach beside one of the world's few public roads built along an active airstrip, with stilt fishermen posted at its rocky ends. Together they make Koggala a rewarding half-day between beach stays.
