About Rumassala & the Peace Pagoda
Rumassala is a hill with a flight plan: in Ramayana tradition, this jungle headland between Galle and Unawatuna is a fragment of the Himalayas, dropped by the monkey god Hanuman as he hurried back to the battlefield with a mountain of healing herbs - which conveniently explains the unusual medicinal plants botanists still find on its slopes. The hill's crown today is the Sri Lanka Japanese Peace Pagoda, a serene white stupa built by the Nipponzan-Myōhōji order in the 2000s, whose terrace gazes across Galle harbour to the fort's lighthouse - one of the south's great free views, especially at sunset. Below, paths drop through butterfly-thick jungle to Jungle Beach's twin coves for snorkelling and lazy swims. Walkable from both Unawatuna and Galle Fort, Rumassala folds legend, view, and beach into one unhurried half-day.
