About Galle

Galle Fort is the best-preserved European-built fortified town in South Asia, and the rare heritage site that people still live in. The Portuguese fortified the headland in 1588; the Dutch rebuilt it properly from 1649, laying out the grid of streets, the bastions and the drains that still work. The British added the lighthouse and left the rest alone. Inside the walls it is a working neighbourhood of Dutch townhouses, a 1755 Reformed church floored with the gravestones of colonists, a mosque facing the lighthouse, gem dealers, bookshops, and more boutique hotels than any other square kilometre in Sri Lanka. Walking the three-kilometre rampart circuit at dusk - past the cricket ground, the boys leaping off the wall into the sea, and the lighthouse turning on - is the thing everyone comes for, and it is genuinely as good as advertised. The ramparts also blunted the 2004 tsunami; the old town survived where the bus station outside did not. UNESCO-listed since 1988.
