About Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa is Sri Lanka's most accessible coral reef destination and a laid-back beach hub with a buzzing backpacker culture, excellent seafood restaurants, and a mix of budget and mid-range guesthouses. The coral reef sits just 100 metres offshore - snorkeling or diving here lets you see parrotfish, butterflyfish, triggerfish, and turtles in crystal water. Glass-bottom boats offer a no-swim alternative. The beach itself is narrow but sociable, with beach volleyball, yoga classes, and nightly gatherings at the shacks. The town appeals equally to surfers (decent breaks to the north), divers, and travellers wanting creature comforts without Colombo's pace. It's a natural stop between the hill country and the south-coast beaches, just 90 minutes from Kandy.
