Peraliya, a village on the coast road just north of Hikkaduwa, carries the heaviest memory of 26 December 2004: here the tsunami struck the crowded Colombo–Galle train 'Samudra Devi' (Queen of the Sea), overwhelming its carriages twice and killing an estimated 1,700 or more passengers and villagers - the deadliest railway disaster in world history, within the wider catastrophe that took some 35,000 Sri Lankan lives. The village today holds its memory with dignity: a memorial garden and monuments name the lost; a preserved carriage stands as witness; and just south, the great seated Buddha of the Tsunami Honganji Viharaya - a gift from Japan, standing as tall as the wave - gazes out to sea in permanent vigil over a communal grave. Travellers pass this coast bound for beaches; stopping for twenty minutes of respect deepens every mile that follows. The trains run again, slowing as they pass.
