Kosgoda, a quiet stretch of coast between Bentota and Ambalangoda, is the centre of Sri Lanka's sea-turtle conservation movement. All five of the island's visiting species - green, olive ridley, loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback - nest on its beaches, and a cluster of hatcheries and projects here buy eggs from former poachers, incubate them in guarded sand nurseries, and release the hatchlings after dark to scramble down the sand to the sea. Visits are simple and affecting: tanks hold injured turtles being rehabilitated and day-old hatchlings awaiting release, and guides explain each species' story. The gold standard experience is joining a supervised night watch to see a wild female nest, or a dusk hatchling release on the beach.
