About Brief Garden
Brief Garden is the life's work of Bevis Bawa - aristocrat, soldier, six-foot-seven bon vivant, and elder brother of the architect Geoffrey - who from 1929 spent six decades transforming a rubber smallholding inland of Bentota into the most personal garden in Sri Lanka. Named for the legal brief that paid for the land, the five acres tumble downhill in theatrical set pieces: moon gates and mossy stairways, ponds mirroring giant bamboo, lawns that end in jungle wings, and sly sculptures at every turn. The house remains as Bawa left it, filled with his art and that of famous house guests - most notably the Australian artist Donald Friend, who came for six days and stayed six years, leaving murals and doors alive with mischief.
