Lunuganga is where modern Asian architecture learned to breathe: the country estate of Geoffrey Bawa, father of 'tropical modernism', who bought an abandoned rubber plantation on Dedduwa Lake in 1948 and spent the next fifty years composing it into his private masterpiece. The garden works like his buildings - a sequence of framed views and staged arrivals: a terrace that borrows the lake, a cinnamon hill crowned by a single jar, staircases that promise and withhold, pavilions placed like punctuation. Bawa tried out at Lunuganga the ideas that became the island's great hotels and houses, and the estate reads as his autobiography in landscape. Now run by the Geoffrey Bawa Trust, it opens daily for guided garden tours, and its handful of rooms - including Bawa's own - host guests who want to sleep inside the experiment.
