About Barberyn Lighthouse
Barberyn Lighthouse has marked the reef-strewn approach to Beruwala since 1889: a handsome white tower of imperial engineering rising from its own palm-fringed islet a kilometre offshore, one of the four great 'international' lighthouses the British built around Ceylon for the ocean trade (with Dondra, Great Basses, and Little Basses). Unlike its wave-battered southern siblings, Barberyn is sociable: fishing boats from Beruwala's harbour run visitors across the channel when the sea permits, landing on a rock islet of coconut palms, keeper's quarters, and reef-fringed swimming coves with the tower presiding over all. The climb (keeper permitting) rewards with a coastline view from Bentota's river mouth to the mosque headland. Even from shore, the lighthouse completes every Beruwala sunset. Pair the boat trip with the fish-harbour dawn for the full maritime day.
