Richmond Castle is the low country's grandest folly: a sixteen-room mansion completed around 1900 by Don Arthur de Silva Wijesingha Siriwardena, the young 'Padikara Mudali' of Kalutara, who saw an Indian maharajah's palace while studying in England and ordered his own - blending Indian and British high style around a soaring two-storey hall of Burma teak, with turned columns, imported Italian floor tiles, and stained glass that scatters colour across the landings. The estate's fruit gardens roll down toward the Kalu Ganga. The story turns tender: the Mudali's marriage was childless, and on his death the castle passed in trust to educate disadvantaged children - a role its grounds served for decades, and which still shapes its gentle, faded-grandeur atmosphere. Twenty minutes from Kalutara's beach hotels, it makes an atmospheric rainy-morning visit: creaking teak, sepia photographs, and mango trees heavy over the lawns.
