Beruwala claims one of the longest memories on the west coast: Arab traders are recorded settling here around the 8th century, making it among the earliest Muslim settlements on the island, and their legacy endures in the serene white Ketchimalai Mosque on the palm-lined headland above the harbour - one of Sri Lanka's oldest, and the goal of pilgrims during its annual festival. Below it, the fishing harbour roars to life at dawn as multi-day boats unload tuna and the auction hall fills with buyers; it is one of the coast's great free spectacles. The beach curving south toward Bentota launched Sri Lankan resort tourism in the 1970s and still delivers reliable golden-sand holidays, with calmer 'Moragalla' waters at its northern end good for families. The Barberyn lighthouse island offshore adds a classic maritime silhouette to every sunset.
