About Bolgoda Lake

Bolgoda Lake is Colombo's weekend escape hatch: the largest natural freshwater lake system in Sri Lanka, spreading its two broad basins and winding channels across some 375 square kilometres of water and wetland between Moratuwa, Panadura, and Piliyandala - yet barely an hour from the capital. Its shorelines alternate fishing hamlets, mangrove islets, and the boathouses of lakeside villas and small resorts, from which catamarans and motorboats run unhurried safaris: expect water monitors on sunning logs, purple herons and kingfishers among some 150 recorded bird species, and - the boatmen swear - the occasional shy crocodile. Anglers chase barramundi at dawn, kayakers thread the channels, and lakeside restaurants make long lunches of lagoon prawns. As a gentle first or last day around Colombo - water, birds, and a sunset the colour of king coconut - Bolgoda is the easy answer.
