Thalangama Lake proves Colombo never fully paved its wetlands: an ancient irrigation tank (credited to King Parakramabahu's era) on the capital's eastern edge whose bund, paddies, and reed beds now form the city's best casual birdwatching. A gentle 3–4 kilometre loop on quiet lanes circles the water, and the cast list is remarkable for a suburb: pheasant-tailed jacanas trotting the lotus pads, purple herons frozen mid-hunt, stork-billed and white-throated kingfishers, cotton pygmy geese, and in the northern winter a seasoning of migrant waders - well over a hundred species ring the year. Water monitors patrol like small dragons; early joggers, cyclists, and fishermen share the bund in easy coexistence.
