Ambalangoda, a workaday coastal town between Bentota and Hikkaduwa, is the guardian of one of Sri Lanka's most striking folk traditions: mask carving. For centuries, craftsmen here have carved and painted the wildly expressive masks used in kolam folk theatre and in thovil - exorcism dance rituals in which performers embodying eighteen disease-demons are danced out of the afflicted. The best introduction is the Ariyapala mask museum and workshop, where you can watch carvers transform feather-light kaduru wood into snarling, bug-eyed demons and serene royal faces, then browse the family shop for the real thing (far superior to airport souvenirs). Around town, low-key attractions include old Buddhist temples with vivid murals and a moonstone-mining and handloom heritage. It's an easy, worthwhile cultural stop on any west-coast beach itinerary.
