Seenigama Muhudu Viharaya floats its devotion just offshore: a compact temple crowning a rock islet off the coast road north of Hikkaduwa, dedicated to Devol Deviyo - the seafaring deity who, legend says, came ashore here against all divine prohibition and won his place among the island's gods. Devol's speciality makes Seenigama unique among Sri Lankan shrines: he is the god of justice for the wronged, and petitioners cross by boat (or wade at low water) not only to seek blessings for protection and prosperity but - in the temple's famous old rite - to grind chillies in stone querns while naming the injustice done to them, entrusting retribution to the god. Fishermen salute the islet as they pass; travellers get one of the south coast's most photogenic sights, the little white temple against big Indian Ocean skies. The land-side temple complex and the coastal drive complete a short, memorable stop.
