About Mirissa

Mirissa is a single crescent of sand between two headlands, and it earns its reputation twice over. Off the harbour to the west, the continental shelf swings unusually close to shore near Dondra Head - the island's southern tip - which puts blue whales and sperm whales within a couple of hours of land between November and April. Boats leave around 6.30am; choose an operator that keeps its distance and doesn't chase, because plenty don't. On land it is a beginner's beach: a forgiving break at the eastern end, surf schools along the sand, and a row of seafood grills that put tables out at dusk. Parrot Rock, a scramble of boulders in the middle of the bay, and Coconut Tree Hill on the eastern point are the two views everyone photographs. Mornings are quiet and swimmable, evenings get loud, and Secret Beach - twenty minutes west by tuk-tuk - is neither secret nor crowded.
