Coconut Tree Hill is the most photographed patch of grass in southern Sri Lanka: a low red-earth headland at Mirissa's eastern end, crowned by a perfect stand of coconut palms leaning over the Indian Ocean. Part of a working coconut estate that generously tolerates its fame, the hill earns the pilgrimage - the palms frame the surf line of Mirissa's bays in one direction and an unbroken horizon of blue in the other, and at golden hour the whole composition lights up like a travel poster of itself. The walk from Mirissa beach takes fifteen minutes along the sand and up a short estate track. Sunrise brings photographers and blissful quiet; late afternoon brings the crowds, the drone pilots, and a certain festival mood. Pair it with whale watching or Secret Beach for the complete Mirissa day, and leave the palms as you found them.
