The Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara is the most photographed man-made sight in Sri Lanka: a graceful 91-metre viaduct of nine stone arches, curving 24 metres above a green amphitheatre of jungle and tea between Ella and Demodara stations. Completed in 1921 under the British, it was built - so every local guide will tell you - without steel: solid stone, brick, and cement, after the girders intended for it were requisitioned during the First World War. The classic experience is timing your visit to a train crossing: the blue carriages easing around the curve, horn echoing off the hillsides, crowds waving from the arches' shadow. Walk in along the rail line from Ella station (20–30 minutes) or descend the shortcut paths from the road; cafes on the slope above serve coffee with the perfect frame. Early morning brings mist, soft light, and the fewest people.
