About Namunukula Peak
Namunukula - 'the nine peaks' - is the great free-standing massif of the east, its long crest rising to 2,036 metres above Badulla and Passara and visible from half of Uva province like a wall against the morning sun. The classic ascent starts from the Passara side through tea estates and eucalyptus, a half-day walk on estate tracks and ridgeline paths rather than a technical climb, ending at a summit shrine where tradition places one of the Buddha's footprints (the mountain shares that honour, locals note serenely, with Sri Pada across the island). The reward is reach: on clear dawns the view runs west to the wall of the central highlands and east across descending foothills all the way to the coastal shimmer near Arugam Bay - one of very few places where Sri Lanka shows you both its heart and its edge. Mist arrives by mid-morning; start dark, summit at first light.
