About Ravana Cave

Ravana Cave stacks myth on prehistory in the cliffs above Ella: reached by a stiff flight of some six hundred steps from the Ella–Wellawaya road, the modest cavern is woven deep into the local Ramayana - here, tradition says, King Ravana concealed the abducted Sita, moving her through tunnel networks that believers trace to Ravana Falls, Dowa temple, and half the caves of the region. Archaeology gives the cave a different distinction: excavations turned up evidence of human habitation reaching back roughly 25,000 years, placing Ella's cliffs among the island's oldest addresses. The visit is short and sweaty - a scramble into the cool, bat-flitted chamber, then the reward of the climb: framed views over Ella Gap's great green V to the plains. Pair it with Ravana Falls just down the road, and let the legend argue with the radiocarbon on the walk back down.
